Mozilla is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for most downloads in a single day - TODAY! And in doing so is revealing an interesting picture of global internet activity.
If we are to use a new Firefox release as a barometer for forward looking interent usage, does this map tell us anything new? As you would expect, North America, Australia and most of Europe are heavy downloaders (Portugal, Ireland and Scandinavia make interesting exceptions - smaller populations?). Africa and the Middle East hold the least activity with Iran bucking the trend as a heavy downloader). China and India stick out from neighbouring markets, whilst the most diverse continent has to be South America with very poor representation from some countries to heavy downloading from Brazil.
Maybe it just reaffirms our previous thoughts about the progressive markets in the world. But it also shows us what a surprisingly global product a web-based programme can become. And though a Guinness World Record attempt is a twee way of PR’ing your product, it looks set to be very effective - total downloads have now broken 6m as I write this.
