The Olympics Is Now Truly Global

This neat map from the New York Times shows just how global the Olympics are today and some interesting trends.

  • The Olympics are now truly global. Only 10 individual nations (others made up mixed teams) won medals in the first modern Olympics in 1896. 112 years later 80 nations have won medals.
  • The host nation always seems to performs better than they ever have.
  • The USA has always been a podium medal count winner (except for during the 1980 Russian Olympics, which was boycotted by a number of nations. The USA did however dominate the Olympic Boycott Games held in Philadelphia that summer).

Another simple yet great tool from the NYT.
