The joy of specs - what does it all mean?

Buying a piece of tech these days can take a fair bit of research. Not only are there dozens of models to choose from, there’s a list of technical specifications as long as your arm.

But, do the numbers really add up or are the brands just blinding us with science?

Recently browsing the LCD screens at my local gadget store, I started to notice something. Almost all the TV’s had huge lists of spec (designed to impress me), but most of it seemed meaningless.

If it wasn’t techno waffle, every manufacturer had a different way of showing the benefits of their tv. Basically leaving me with an ‘apples and pears’ comparison option … and making a difficult task almost impossible.

Click on the example above to see a typical example of some Sony technology (and it’s not just them). Sure some of this stuff is obvious and some you can work out. But how do you compare ‘X.V.Colour sytem’ with another screen.

Eventually I started to base my choice on how many little badges does the thing have (because the more the better right), not very scientific I know.

Maybe this is why the manufactures do it in the first place. If there was a standardised list for specifications it would present a much more even playing field.
