Indiana Jones and the Changing Face of Hollywood Hype

Indy’s come a long way since 1981Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Finally. It’s been 19 years since we last saw Indy - 19 years trying to pick the truth out of the rumours. And with only a month to go I’m pretty excited. I am not the only one. The Indiana Jones series is a silver screen legend. Rarely do film-goers talk about action films with such enthusiasm because rarely does Hollywood produce action films with such quality characters. And rarely has a film’s development had such a slow burn. Suffice to say anticipation around the Cystal Skull is rife. Hype should be easy. But it ain’t what it used to be. read full post »

Virals - No one knows anything

All virals are Black Swans.

Or why the use of past references and case studies might make you less likely to come up with the next big viral phenonemon.

I’m talking here, of course, about real virals. The ones that have been seen by millions of people, that everyone talked about, that have changed pop culture and redefined the way we advertise.

I’m not restricting my thoughts to online virals, as seems to be the trend to do, as any piece of communication can become viral; the Internet is just the facilitator.

I’m also not just talking about ‘advertising’ virals, but phenomena that have ended up becoming viral eg. Chocolate Rain, Mentos and Diet Coke, Blairwitch etc.

Project Cloverfield: Can too much hype kill a ‘Monster Movie’?

Ok, I’m going to keep this brief. There’s a movie. It might be a monster movie. It might not. It might be called Cloverfield… We know it’s written/directed by J.J. Abrams, it probably is… and every geek on the Internet is talking about it.
