David Erixon - Mobiles, Tech & Hyper Island (Interview)

Recently I posted about Hyper Island an amazing school for technology and digital discovery. It wasn’t until a few days later that I realised one of the founders of Hyper was now working for Vodafone and I had a contact there.

So could I speak to the man himself? The answer was yes. So here’s my interview with David Erixon, Director of Brand Strategy & Manifestation, Vodafone Global Marketing. Oh yes … and co founder of Hyper Island.

Wii like iPlayer… or do Wii?

bbc_iplayer.gifwii_console.jpg

It was announced yesterday that BBC’s iPlayer will soon be available on the Wii (having already been rolled out to iPhone and iTouch - all the iProducts sticking together).  I read the anouncement and thought “Wow”, then thought I can watch TV on my, er, TV.  So, I thought, “Hmm”, then I thought having Internet sites that deliver TV programs fed to your TV is the best place for them as they’re at the centre of your entertainment set-up at home, so I thought, “Wow”.  Then I thought, “But not many Wii’s are actually set-up to connect wirelessy compared to say over 70% of Xbox 360s and 40% of PS3s, so I thought “Hmm”.  Is this “Wow” or “Hmm”?  Help me out…

Ambient Interfaces

I wrote a piece a while ago about how ambient interfaces were the next step in digital - being able to control computers without the rather awkward encumbrance of a keyboard and mouse. And lo and behold, the world has gone ambient interface crazy.

The Wii remote, multi-touch screens, the iPhone - these are all devices that use your body in a much more natural way to interact with devices. They are somehow more human.

Here’s a list of some other, more recent examples:

The New iPhone. Does anyone care?

Yesterday I got an email about Apple releasing a new version of the iPhone.

Following the very interesting article in this month’s Wired about the genesis of the iPhone, which talked about how Apple and Steve Jobs has ripped apart the fabric of the US carrier business, I was fascinated to see what the latest development was.

Was it the much anticipated 3G iPhone? Were they adding GPS functionality? Was there some new design?

Nope. Turns out it was just a memory upgrade - from 8Gb to 16Gb.

Does anyone really care that much about memory capability?

iDon’t iPhone

iPhone
Some trade rags
have been attempting to make a story about the iPhone not reaching its 2 month sales targets, saying that they are 10,000 short of their 200,000 target.

Two things leap to mind: Firstly surely achieving 95% of one’s sales target is pretty good. If it was 100% surely they’d underestimated demand and the targets were too soft?
