Knytt Stories - tiny game, big idea. (interview)

Knytt Stories

I think it would be true to say that Knytt Stories has almost a cult following on the net. Doc Rogers discusses the creation of a legend with it’s maker Nicklas.

Doc: Hello Nicklas thank you for taking some time to talk to the Knitware team, we know you’re really busy on several new projects so really appreciate your time. Let’s talk Knytt!

Nicklas: No problem at all!

Doc: If anyone hasn’t seen Knytt stories, how would you describe the concept and game to them?

Nicklas: It’s basically a two-dimensional platform game, for those who don’t know what that is, the game is similar to Super Mario Bros, but with more modern graphics and a large, cool soundtrack as you play.

A level editor is also included. You can design your own levels and share them with other players.

Doc: Can you tell me little bit about what’s involved with putting something like Knytt together, how long does it take, what are the hard parts?

Nicklas: I use Multimedia Fusion 2 to create my games, It’s a more advanced programming language. It makes the process a bit faster, programming the game, creating all the graphics, music, and sound effects for the game (and expansion). It still took plenty of time, more than a year.

Luckily, I didn’t have to do all the work myself, I got a lot of help from members of my forum, and musicians who I know. This helped to reduced the overall time it took to create the game.

Doc: All the gamers on the knitware team are big fans and it’s amazingly popular on the web (I read nothing but good reviews), were you surprised at the response you’ve have had?

Nicklas: I was honestly surprised that the amount of negative reviews was so low. Knytt received more negative reviews than Knytt Stories, which is understandable as Knytt is a bit more difficult (well, the actual game is far easier to play, but the extremely low amount of challenge and enemies, and the idea about exploring a vast quite empty world is a bit difficult for the average gamer to enjoy).

I personally still enjoy Knytt better though, as it’s the most personal game I have created.

Doc: Do you have any plans for a knytt 2 or maybe some extra features?

Nicklas: Not at this point, but I am working on something else that should be pretty cool… I can’t say that much about it now though.

Doc: Cool, that’s almost a scoop, drop me a line when you can discuss it.

Do you have any game heroes or people you think we should keep an eye on … game stars of the future perhaps?

Nicklas: Definitely. Although the creators of Samorost 2 have got tons of attention from more or less everywhere, I can’t help but give them some as well.

Amanita Design is obviously working on some new full-scale adventure game that goes under the name Machinarium. I just can’t wait to play it!

Another author to check out is Bernie (Creator of ‘A Game With a Kitty’) who just released a really cool freeware game named ‘Stargirl and the Thief from the Exploded Moon’ (I love long titles) that I really enjoyed! It obviously gets a lot of inspiration from Super Mario Bros 2.

Doc: Thankyou Nicklass, really good to talk to you … good luck with your future projects?

Nicklas: No problem, thanks a lot :)
