Is anyone backing up the Internet?

1.gif

Tuesday, Feb 26th 2008 saw the opening of Svalbard’s giant cold store for the worlds seeds (source Guardian UK). It felt good to know someone was taking care of this kind of thing.

What about looking after other important assets like … the Internet? Well, I guess you could argue that it’s not that important, however looking back on old documents can tell you a lot about a culture and it’s development. Either way I did find the Internet Archive: Wayback Machine … and it’s a start.

The Wayback Machine is a great way to nose around the old versions of agency websites.

http://www.archive.org is the coolest. Only way to check out my old work back in the 90’s. It all looks so shocking..

Thats a really good point Doc !

Its one thing books have over digital - they get stored in libraries for ever. The internet just gets cached a few times by Google then overwritten.

I thought about posting about this a while back - but didn’t know how to suggest we fix it! Massive hard disks underground somewhere I guess - where the ghosts of the web live on in perpetuity.
