Sony Japan announced yesterday that the Sony PSP will be able to use Skype services following the next system upgrade on March 18. As a PSP owner, I thought that sounded great. But then I thought, hold on, I don’t use Skype on my PC so why would I use my PSP to do it? In fact, I don’t get close to using my free minutes on my mobile phone each month as it is, so why would I use the PSP as a very large and heavy handset which can’t call regular numbers for free like my mobile? Ah, but if I was travelling all the time (as I used to do in a previous job), it could be very useful in hotels to avoid the telephone charges that always seem to have a tariff based on prices 30 years ahead. But then I’d have my laptop in a hotel so would use that for Skype instead. Do I need every device to do everything? Am I missing the point? (At 38) Am I just too old?
I mentioned in a previous post that I am Generation-T, the Transition generation, who will be the only generation to know life before and after online changed the world forever. So, maybe I just don’t realise how many (younger) people out there will use the PSP as their bedroom phone to call their mates.
In the end, I just couldn’t think of a situation where I would realistically use Skype on a PSP. But us stereotypical males love gadgets - simply having the ability to do something is just as important as actually using that ability. So, my final thought was the strongest:
Skype on PSP? Cool… It just is.
