Respect the tech!

3.gif

The FT reported this week that the shortage of engineers in Germany has become so acute that its leading companies are “turning to the kindergarten to guarantee future supplies”.

Firms like Siemens and Bosch are giving toys and hard cash to playgroups to hook kids as young as three! This got me thinking … read full post »

cctv.jpg

So we know that the UK spends more on CCTV cameras per capita of any country in Europe. But, have you heard the latest way the authorities are going to use them? Brands beware …

Shock … 40% of Europe is offline!

road_block.jpg

According to a European Commission report this week, there is still some way for internet penetration in Europe to travel. Some countries like Sweden are mad for it, some in ‘New Europe’ are less bothered. But that is not the most the most interesting geographical statistic about the internet if you ask me… read full post »

Green Technology

untitled1.jpg

British Gas is launching a range of wind turbines and solar panels that will allow customers to generate their own power. The government has apparently assisted this ‘microgeneration’ trend by cutting red tape.  Can the democratisation of such technology save the planet? read full post »

Fancy some Bio-Sensory gaming?

neuro.jpg

Its gonna be in the shops this Christmas apparently. Head gear that reads your mind, or at least your brain activity, and makes a corresponding command in the game you are playing. You can communicate your emotions like ‘anger’ or ‘calm’ - and you can move objects around Luke Skywalker stylee with just your mind. Interested?

Prosumers

I love the word prosumer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosumer

It’s kind of flattering. It kind of says ‘I get technology and I’m really good at my hobbies’. Prosumers want to do things properly… Slick movies, beautiful photos, nice prints, crisp audio, fast wifi connections. But how much longer will the word will be around for? read full post »

Retro Brands

truffle-shuffle.jpg

Scamp recently posted a Space Invaders scarf. Well, my favourite source for 80’s apparel is Truffle Shuffle (www.truffleshuffle.co.uk). I find a strange sense of pride wearing a retro T-Shirt. It sort of says - “I grew up watching PROPER entertainment. All you kids have got today is X Factor”. And it got me thinking. Why are retro properties only ever brought back on clothing?

Why not attach the great popular culture ‘brands’ of the 80’s to technology too? After all, its thirty somethings who are splashing out the most on tech right now. For starters, how about : Knight Rider Sat Nav units… Or Goonies GPS software - where X marks the spot… ET mobile phone tariffs… A-Team virus software… Action Man survival gadgets… Top Gun headsets… Got anymore?

Linked out

Does anyone agree that there is something gauche about LinkedIn? I think its the way they spread the fear of terminal unemployment lest you expand your network. Messages like ”Harvard Business School graduates average 58 connections” and ”Adding 5 connections makes you 3.7x more likely to receive a job offer” make you feel there is some sort of great wild west connections rush on and you better get stuck in boy - or end up destitute in the great depression. read full post »

Is the PS3 living?

I guess the 96 sheet says “the PS3 is going to hit me like a tornado”. But, I’m not so sure. All I can say for certain is its going to hit my wallet, and maybe my wife will hit me if she finds the £350 receipt.

The PS3’s launch penetration is similar to the 360, and I know its far too early to say if the PS3 is going to seriously struggle – but you’ve got to admit it is an ‘awkward’ console. read full post »
